Immunotherapy of cancer (IMCAN)

Alligator has developed a platform for next generation immunotherapy of cancer, providing systemic anti-tumor effect with minimal systemic toxicity. The strategy is to use local administration of FIND® optimized immunoregulatory molecules (protein engineered molecules for optimal function in tumor environment) to achieve maximal efficacy with minimal systemic toxicity. The platform has been developed in collaboration with Prof. Tötterman, at Uppsala University, a pioneer in the field of local cancer immunotherapy, and researchers at Lund University.

Cancer is the second most common cause of death in Sweden and there is a high unmet medical need for new therapies. The global market for cancer drugs is estimated at approximately 70 billion USD in 2008. Immunotherapy is considered to be one of the future weapons against cancer, aiming at stimulating and instructing the immune system of the patients to eliminate cancer cells and attack and prevent metastasis.

Stimulation of the immune system, using systemic administration (systemic immunotherapy), often cause toxic side effects. Alligator Biosciences immunotherapy platform aims at minimizing toxic side effects by using a local administration approach. Compared to systemic immunotherapy, local immunotherapy requires a lower total dose, and primarily activates tumor specific immune cells. Local immunotherapy causes less general immune activation, which minimizes the risk for systemic toxicity, and efficiently generates tumor specific immune cells to achieve systemic anti tumor effect to destroy metastasising tumor cells.

Alligator Bioscience is collaborating with Professor Thomas Tötterman, Head of Clinical Immunology, Uppsala University, a pioneer in the field of cancer immunotherapy. Within this program several immunomodulatory targets are evaluated using in vivo models.

“Alligator Bioscience is the ideal partner to translate our clinical and preclinical research into novel cancer therapies. Their FIND® technology enables design of protein drugs tailor made for our approach to immunotherapy.”
